Just one partition, all 500GB in the single FAT32 partition. I agree the other partition types would be an improvement but the FAT32 is r/w by pretty much everything these days. -

How many partitions do you have on the drive? I should clarify if you want to break it out into several partitions you could format a 500GB drive into FAT32. Most people would find that a hassle I would think. -
I’ve got a 500GB …
I’ve got a 500GB external drive formatted as FAT32, it works OK. Keep the file count per directory below 1000 and you shouldn’t have any problems. -

oke.. i’m beginner.. i just want to buy some stuff to put my fingers, it’s time to test my abilities, but DAMN.. when i try to buy (i’m from Romania) the price is double, like: in USA 2x DN-S1200 & 1x DN-X120 is ~ 1000 usd, in Europe is 1100 euro (VAT included) !!! WTFK? …is not fair, too expensive

FAT32 won’t work …
FAT32 won’t work well if your external drive is larger than 32GB, which 99% of drives out there today are. What about HFS, EXT3, NTFS, or other filesystems? -
