They are making a demand for the money it cost them because of her intentional tort against them. The criminal charges were dropped, but she still did cause the store to spend money because of her actions. If she doesn’t pay, they can sue her and win. A judgment will be on her credit report, etc….

It’s better to pay the $325…she got off light.

My little sister took some things from a store called Superstore, got caught and was arrested. But, because she has a clean record behind her, the police dropped the charges of under $5000 dollars that Superstore was asking for, but her name will be up in the air with the police if anything were to happen again. This is what she told me.
A month after the arrest, I received a mail from LobLaws (the company that owns Superstore and other grocery stores) and it stated that she is being charged $325 for her arrest that day. What I don’t understand is, if the police dropped the charges where is this fee coming from? She has 15 days to pay this or she’s taken to civil court. I asked my father and he told me that my sister should not pay it. He said that she did nothing wrong since the police dropped the charges. LobLaws is just trying to get money from her. If they plan to take her to court, they will contact the police and they will find nothing wrong since they dropped the charges that day? My father says that we should just ignore it.
I don’t quite understand what’s happening with here. Should we just ignore this?

She still has a civil liability for the costs Superstore incurred due to her actions. This has nothing to do with any criminal charges. They can pursue this in court and obtain a judgment against her for their damages/expenses.

I would suggest she pay it and be thankful that is all that she is going to be stuck with. You may wish to get an attorney’s opinion, but I am certain it is not something she should ignore.

I’m just trying to get opinions, it’s not as if I am actually going to follow through with whatever people say on here. Just trying to figure things out.

There are some parts of the world that have legislatures that have allowed the sort of civil lawsuit that you describe. It has nothing to do with the decision of the police not to use public resources to seek a criminal conviction. If you want to know if your state or country has such a law, and you do not wish to look it up but to just blindly accept whatever some person on this site says, then you might want to mention what state or country governs.

I agreed with the answer above mine.
Call the law firm and make sure is legitimate.
then, check any paperwork to see if the charges were dropped. Have her get an arrest report from the police to see the status of that arrest.

In Many instances, the department store will send their lawyers to collect "Pain and Suffering" sort of charges. It is not called "pain and suffering" but it is something along that matter.
Sometimes is better to just paid the 325 however, make sure you get a letter first from the lawyer acquitting her of all wrong doing.

This is a non-carbonated drink, like Nestea, sold in cans, cases of 12… I think i used to get it at Loblaws/Superstore, but haven’t seen it in a while, and can’t find it…. please help… I’m in Oshawa, Ontario.

Well, they are not discontinued so I would suggest ordering them on Amazon, but that might not be a good idea, but another choice is searching them in the 5 closest supermarkets near your home.

Man killed in Coquitlam shooting

A man was shot to death June 2nd 2010 in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Superstore at Westwood Mall in Coquitlam — the Tri-Cities’ third murder of the year.

Coquitlam RCMP responded to a call of shots fired at about 9:45 p.m. in the 3000-block of Lougheed Hwy., near Westwood Street. When they arrived, they found a man in a black Mercedes in severe medical distress.

Paramedics took him to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said the shooting has “all the earmarks of a targeted shooting” but investigators have yet to confirm that.

“Multiple rounds were shot during the shooting,” he said, but the exact number has yet to be determined.

That Superstore location at Westwood Mall is open until 11 p.m. and Carr said there were several cars still in the parking lot; investigators are speaking with those people.

IHIT officers and the Coquitlam RCMP serious crime section are conducting the investigation.
