Indoor Pot-Growing Superstore Opens In Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. — One of the nations first superstores targeting medical marijuana home growers opened with much fanfare in Oakland Thursday including a scheduled ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring two city council members.

Called iGrow, the 15,000 square foot facility, is a one-stop shop located near the Oakland International Airport that offers products and services to assist medical marijuana patients in creating their own indoor cannabis gardens.

Before we talk with anyone we make sure to verify they have a state issued ID, said Justin Jorgenson, who works at the store.

The aisles of the facilities are lined with stacks of indoor grow lights, pot pipes and bongs, water and electrical systems and a selection of potting soils used to grow the best crops.

Among the services offered by iGrows owners is the Grow Squad a group of experts who will offer advice or come to your home to set up an indoor pot growing operation.

The Grow Squad is a group of people you can consult with and ask questions to pertaining to your specific growing situation, Jorgenson said. So if you at trying to grow in your closet or an extra bedroom or in the basement, these guys can actually help you.

The facility will also have a doctor — the ‘Pot Doc’ – located next door who will examine a patient and issue a state cannabis card if they qualify, allowing the person to possess pot legally in California for medical reasons.

Oakland entrepreneur and founder, Dhar Mann, said his store was receiving strong support in the community.

Passed by voters in 1996, Proposition 215 — also known as the Compassionate Use Act allows patients with a valid doctor’s recommendation and state issued ID card to possess and cultivate marijuana for personal medical use. It also allows the patient to grow their own marijuana.
