Should I go to a specialty store like Dell, HP, Gateway? Or will I get a better deal at places like Costo and Best Buy (I live in California…. those stores are stores that sell everything from appliances to soap.) How about Walmart? Are they good for computers? Thank you.
It doesn’t usually matter. Find a model you like and shop around and see who gives the best price. The stores you mention will sell the specialty store brands too. Ignore the previous guy about the specialty stores; if you go to Dell, they’re the ones making the computer in the first place, with no retail markup beyond what profit they’re trying to make.
The only advice I’ll give you is watch the model numbers; sometimes big box stores like Walmart will have computers that look similar with similar model numbers that are actually made with cheaper, crappier components. This makes it seem like you’re getting a good deal, when you’re actually just getting a computer that’ll break sooner.
Prices change as often as people change their underwear! One place is no better than the other for buying a computer. But don’t shop by the sticker that is on the outside. Shop by what hardware is on the inside and what other capabilities it may have!

A mega supersotre can buy from the manufacturer in large quantities and so get considerable discounts – hence the bargain prices.

Generally, stores like BestBuy… Walmart…. you name it, have the cheapest prices for computers compared to smaller local shops or even speciality stores. But it also depends on what you want to get. Its a little like shopping for a car. You can pick a certain model car and different retailers might price you differently and also depending on whats actually inside the car. Bluetooth, 6-cd stereo, gps…. so some cars might cost more even though they are the same model.
The best solution for you might be to just buy a computer from an online store, like cyberpowerpc.com. You can pick exactly what you want in your computer and not pay more than what you would for the same thing at BestBuy. I recommend this since they give you a computer with only the operating system installed and the hard-drive clean and ready to use.
If you dont think you’re able to understand what all the hardware actually does and whats the best choice. Then I just recommend BestBuy and aim for an 800-1000 dollar computer. That will probably last you a good 5 years if taken care of.

Go to the specialty store. for all the right reasons if you are picking a processor go with the Phenom ll X3 and not the Athlon ll X2.

in my opinion you should go to a specialty store, as they can guide you to a suitable product as per requirement, and you won’t end up buying either too basic or too advanced computer.
