The University of Cannabis (UniCann) announces its’ official launch as the largest school for marijuana education with over 30 different classes, 10 academic departments, a graduate learning program and capacities to seat over 3,000 students in an online or physical classroom setting. UniCann strategically partnered with iGrow, the full service marijuana superstore, to house its main campus in Oakland at the 15,000 square foot facility, where the first nearly sold-out seminar is taking place on May 22nd and May 23rd.

As the legalization initiative in California’s November ballot approaches and marijuana becomes more mainstream, hundreds of thousands of interested people from all walks of life eager to learn more about this flowering industry are turning to marijuana education as a starting point. With marijuana education only available in a few states and many interested cannabis patients confined to their homes, “establishing the first online medical marijuana University seemed like the right thing to do” says 25-year old founder Dhar Mann.

He further noted that UniCann’s first graduating class in Oakland will include three City Councilmembers who have already signed up for UniCann’s political and legal classes taking place on May 22nd and May 23rd.

Mann took several measures to ensuring this higher learning institution would be a credible learning resource. The courses have college-style course numbering systems, ranging from 001 for new “seedlings” all the way to 199 for graduate-level “cannasseurs”. The legal classes are taught by lawyers, and the medical courses are taught by doctors. UniCann also released the first industry certification program, with four different certifications levels, each having different pre-requisite and testing requirements. Most importantly, Mann wanted to assemble a faculty comprised of the most exceptional intellectuals and industry advocates, so he turned to his life-mentor and Oakland’s former two-term Vice Mayor and Councilmember, Leo Bazille.

Bazille felt his call-to-action in the cannabis movement stemming from the medical, political and socioeconomic opportunities emerging from this industry. “I was honored to being offered the Chancellor position at the University of Cannabis. By being the voice of UniCann and the center of the cannabis movement, I’ll be in a position to dispel the many falsehoods surrounding medical marijuana and better inform the public on the many wonders of this forbidden fruit.”

The very first customers Thursday at the iGrow store on Hegenberger Road found a doctor ready to help with a medical marijuana prescription, even a massage therapist. The actual plant however was nowhere on site.

“Basically we have everything you would need for medicinal marijuana except for the plants itself. So everything from the systems to the nutrients to the pest control,” said operations manager Justin Jorgenson.

In other words, it’s not a pot club. It’s a gardening supply store that sales sophisticated hydroponic systems to help you grow your own—whether that’s pot, tomatoes or roses.

“We’re saying look, we’ll openly talk to people about marijuana if they have the correct documentation,” Jorgenson said.

Three city council members have said they would attend the ribbon cutting Thursday evening for a business they hope will create much-needed jobs and generate tax revenue.

The doors of iGrow opened as San Jose debates whether to regulate pot clubs, and as activists gather signatures for a November 2010 ballot measure to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana without a doctor’s note.

Leaders of the campaign backing the measure said volunteers would submit around 700,000 signatures Thursday across all 58 California counties.

The initiative needs about 434,000 signatures from registered voters to make the ballot. Campaigners typically try to collect far more to build a cushion in case some signatures are invalidated.

The Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010 would legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults. It also would allow limited growing on private property and would permit local governments to decide whether to legalize and tax pot sales.

Called iGrow, the 15,000 square foot facility, is a one-stop shop located near the Oakland International Airport that offers products and services to assist medical marijuana patients in creating their own indoor cannabis gardens.

Before we talk with anyone we make sure to verify they have a state issued ID, said Justin Jorgenson, who works at the store.

The aisles of the facilities are lined with stacks of indoor grow lights, pot pipes and bongs, water and electrical systems and a selection of potting soils used to grow the best crops.

Among the services offered by iGrows owners is the Grow Squad a group of experts who will offer advice or come to your home to set up an indoor pot growing operation.

The Grow Squad is a group of people you can consult with and ask questions to pertaining to your specific growing situation, Jorgenson said. So if you at trying to grow in your closet or an extra bedroom or in the basement, these guys can actually help you.

The facility will also have a doctor — the ‘Pot Doc’ – located next door who will examine a patient and issue a state cannabis card if they qualify, allowing the person to possess pot legally in California for medical reasons.

Passed by voters in 1996, Proposition 215 — also known as the Compassionate Use Act allows patients with a valid doctor’s recommendation and state issued ID card to possess and cultivate marijuana for personal medical use. It also allows the patient to grow their own marijuana.
